Words that matter...and recording begins for Perfekt World
Heya Heya Heya Hey-yaaa- (Ya, that's a good song. I like it:)
So, a good friend and music industry guru, Jim shared a great article with me a little while back that I've been meaning to share with you all. He and I aren't always in agreeance with what's hot and not in the music biz since he sees it from 'the sold-out stadiums, already famous, major scene/major label' side of things and I see it from 'the hard working artist, grassroots, been burned many times but still love what I do so here I am' perspective.
Having said that, reading this article from Encore magazine was a breath of freaking fresh air. It somehow felt REALLY good to hear all my frustrations and thoughts on where the scene is at being broadcast from a voice who people would listen to-not the artist herself. She couldn't possibly have a sense of the music industry as a business and the effect music has on the world at large. That's stuff for the old days, the folks who invented music and gave it soul-right? I say a big fat, NO! I long for a time when people stop censoring music again and let the artist create new ground and move boundaries like they were meant to. God, there's got to be a reason why we were made such hopelessly passionate and emotional creatures! At least let us share our freedom..otherwise it remains trapped inside of us.
Anyway friends, here are a couple of quotes from the article. Tell me what you think. Let's trample on the bullshit, shall we?

"Hello, let me introduce you to 2007, wherein the powers-that-be tell us the music business has been wrecked by piracy but those with their ear to the ground know it's much more complicated. The biggest problem facing artists isn't piracy, but apathy. How do you get people to pay attention in a fast-paced world with so many entertainment options?..."
"...So, you're up shit ocean with a paddle so small you're overwhelmed. Welcome to the club. You'd better be doing it for a love of the music, because chances are that's ALL you'll have, your music and your enjoyment in playing it. Maybe you'll gain some traction, you'll become a pro. But the odds are against you. You need that desire and perseverance and LUCK! And it's harder to get lucky every day. Even if the radio station DID play your record, what would it MEAN, is anybody LISTENING? We'll get some clarity in the future. The gulf between amateur and pro will reemerge. But chances are, only a thin sliver of pros will be like the stars of yore. There will be Kanye, and then the guy who can fill theatres. That's the game you're getting into."
So, there we have it people. If it's not for the money, then where's all the soul at? It's hard to find in all the rubble.
I'm beginning work with a great producer, Mark Turrigiano (produced Ingrid Michaelson and other gems) this week. I think it's going to be a damn good record. Tits out, no holding back. Are you ready cuz I just can't wait.
